Normal Mailer articulated the revenge rationale for capital punishment better than anyone, although to my recollection his extraction of this idea focused on the community rather than the victims. In any event, the path to abolishing the death penalty has less to do with the innocence argument and more to do with understanding and refuting the urge to communal revenge. I wish it were more logical than this.

Just a quick correction, both of the pictures at the top of the page were taken by news organizations. The one that is not set in Florida(!) was taken off of the Journal-Sentinel website. Most of my attempts at capturing the size of the crowd were really bad, mostly because I am under 5'6", so even when I held my phone up over my head and stood on tip-toes, all you saw were the tops of about three heads or something. So I sent that one to you along with Triumph's comments on the situation because it was the best I could find that depicted the immensity of the gathering that I had just attended. Sorry to confuse.

One of the crazier things here is the impact this could have on public transit. Walker somehow got elected by bitching about public transit and promising to refuse federal funds for high speed rail. (I will probably go to my grave baffled that there could be so much popular animosity against public transit, but this is not the forum to discuss my confusion.) As the Journal Sentinel reported two days ago, "[Walker's union busting bill] could endanger federal aid for buses because U.S. Law requires that collective bargaining rights remain in place to get fedaral funds, according to the U.S. Department of Labor." So Wisconsinites can look forward to paying the same federal taxes as everyone else and getting none of the good stuff, like trains or buses. Every cent out of my paycheck that goes to the feds will probably just go to buying the army some new tanks.

For me, Brett Favre is a shining example of the American public's unwillingness to admit, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that water is, in fact, wet. I watch a lot of football, and from what I've observed over the years, Brett Favre is not, in fact, a nice guy. He's the guy who knocked up his college girlfriend, but then waited a good 8 years before bothering to marry her. He's not a guy who makes his teammates better, and he's always, always, ALWAYS looking for the splashy "LOOK AT ME" play, over preserving the football, punting, and living to fight another series. He pissed all over Green Bay and their fan base when he left town, because he couldn't get his way, he got Eric Mangini fired in New York, his waffling kept MN from trying to get a decent QB (though as far as I'm concerned, they got exactly what they deserved). Oh, and by the way, he only won ONE Super Bowl, up there with such Hall of Fame Talent as Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Jim McMahon, and Doug Williams. Anyhow, it always nice to see another thoughtful grownup call him out on the complete and total raging touchebag that he is. Thanks, Jason.

99 Ranch Market is awesome...I too have experienced being the only Gweilo...the seafood and meat produce is amazing!!!! Wintertime citrus selection is wonderful as well.
